Weight gain is an important factor that gauges the health of the baby and the mother. Ideally for a woman with average weight and height, the gain during pregnancy would be between 25-35 pounds. There can be exceptions depending on the body constitution of a woman. The pattern of weight gain can differ in the same woman during different pregnancies.

It is ok to gain 2-4 pounds during the first trimester and then 1 pound every month for remaining two trimesters. Women who are underweight; before conceiving tend to put on more weight during the second and third trimester. The body mechanism starts storing more fat to compensate.

Underweight women; therefore gain around 28-40 pounds by the end of the third trimester. Overweight women usually show less gain in weight, as the pregnancy progresses. The reason is natural availability of fat required for the sustenance of the fetus and a safe delivery. The normal weight gain seen in such women range from 5-10 pounds. The weight gain for the mother is comparatively more in case of multiple babies. While the weight gained is not directly proportional to the number of babies; but it is more than carrying a single baby.

Women who are initially overweight can resort to mild exercises to control weight gain during pregnancy. It is important that weight gain is gradual and progressive; indicating a normal fetus and normal functioning of the mother’s body. The initial weight and health of the mother determines the tendency to gain weight during pregnancy. On a lighter side, it is wise to keep checking since the excess weight after delivery has to be shed and this can prove difficult with a newborn to be looked after. Regular monitoring of weight gain is important during pregnancy.
