Pregnancy Week 11

How is Your Baby

The crown to rump length of your baby this week is an average of 1.75 - 2.4 inches and fetal weight is about 0.3 ounces (8 gm). The size of your baby is now equal to a large lime. You baby’s growth is very rapid and, in the next 3 weeks, you can see baby's length to double. Your baby's organs have fully developed. Though you cannot feel it, yet he is moving and is active in your womb.

Baby's head is about half of the entire length of the body now. From this Pregnancy Week 11 head starts extending stiffer with raised chin and neck, as they began to develop. Nerve cells have begun to co-ordinate and his brain has started to create communication routes. The baby’s nails and hair have started growing. The eyelids will fuse shut, and the irises will begin to develop. In Week 11 external genitalia are developing, but it’s still too early to determine the sex of a baby by ultrasound. By this time, next week the blood will begin to circulate in the baby’s body and uterus, and the placenta starts to function.

How Mom is Doing

As the development of baby is very fast the same way uterus is growing. Uterus is so big that you can feel it in your pelvis and just in middle of the pubic bone. Hormonal changes will cause frequent headaches. You may also experience excessive salivation. During this Pregnancy Week 11 you may observe an increased hair and nail growth. You may also get dark patches on your face and neck as your body is producing more melanin (a hormone). This condition is called chloasma or the mask of pregnancy.

Weight gain is a concern of a lot of women during Pregnancy. Generally we say that you will gain about 1-2 lbs. a month in the first trimester. Some women will actually lose weight and be perfectly fine, particularly if they were ill. Some will gain no weight whatsoever. While yet others will gain 10+ pounds. The key is a healthy diet. However, your focus should be on nutrition rather than weight. You will only need about 300-500 calories extra a day while you are pregnant.

There are many common discomforts in Pregnancy. If you wake with leg cramps, flex your foot upward. This will help stretch the muscle. You may find that a hot pad or a gentle massage will also help relieve the pain. To help avoid these cramps, be sure to get some exercise daily. Also, potassium (such as eating a banana a day) is said to help ward them off.

An increase in vaginal discharge during pregnancy is normal as long as it is clear and white. If you notice a smell, itchiness, or color, you may have developed an infection.
