Pregnancy Week 12

How Big is Your Baby

The crown to rump length is almost 2.5 inches and the weight of your baby will be somewhere around 10-13 gm. The size of the baby has been doubled in last 3 weeks. By Week 12 your baby is even capable to practice movements in his digestive tract since the intestines now fit into his abdomen. You will be able to hear baby’s heartbeat by a procedure called doppler ultrasound.

At this Week 12, the heart rate will be very fast; about 160 beats per minute. Your baby has achieved a face profile, complete with tiny chin and nose. The skeletal system, which began developing earlier, is now started ossifying. The brain will continue to develop, while the tiny fingernails and toenails have been form.

How Mom is Doing

Since you are now 12 weeks Pregnant, you will start to feel relief from the morning sickness and feel less tired as well feel free from nausea. There will be an increased blood volume and pregnancy hormones working together in your body, leading to increase the oil gland secretion. This results in a flushed, plumper, smoother skin appearance. Congratulations to you as your risk of a miscarriage are now greatly reduced. Your placenta will now start to take over the production of hormones.

By the end of Pregnancy Week 12, your uterus is too large to remain completely in your pelvis. Your abdomen may start to pooch out, but it will be more from bowel distension than the uterus. You will notice that you cannot see your waistline as earlier, it seems to disappear slowly. As you are to begin with second trimester, your nutritional needs will change. You will require an increased amount of vitamin A, B and C with extra iron supplementation.
