Pregnancy Week 5

How Your Baby is Growing and Developing

The embryo which is developing in the womb now has three layers. In the top layer (ectoderm), the neural tube will form, which is also termed as primitive streak and further develops into the nervous system (brain, spinal cord, skin and hair). The middle layer (mesoderm) will develop eventually as the heart and circulatory system, bones, muscles, kidneys and reproductive organs. By day 21, your baby's tiny heart will begin to beat. The innermost layer (endoderm), a simple tube will develop into the intestines, liver, pancreas, bladder, tonsils, thyroids gastrointestinal tract and respiratory system.

In this Pregnancy Week 5 it is possible to distinguish the head and the tail of the baby. Average length of the embryo is 1.25 - 3 mm and it is now pear-shaped. The central nervous system, muscles and bones are budding. Baby’s skeleton is on par of development.

This time next year your baby will be 17 weeks old.
