All about Pregnancy and Birth

The duration of Pregnancy has traditionally been calculated by doctors in terms of nine calendar months or 280 days or 40 weeks from the first day of the last menstrual period. But, fertilization of ovum usually occurs 14 days prior to the expected missed period and in a previously normal cycle of 28 days duration. Thus, the true gestation period is to be calculated by subtracting 14 days from 280 days i.e. 266 days.

For example, let us take the first day of the last period as January 1. Now, add consequent seven days (January 8) and further add 9 calendar months. Your expected date of giving Birth is October 8 in a normal case.

One of the presumptive symptoms of early months of Pregnancy is morning sickness. It appears soon following the missed period and rarely lasts beyond the 3 rd month. Its intensity varies from nausea on rising from bed to loss of appetite or even frequent vomiting. But, usually it does not affect the health status of the mother-to-be. Other common symptoms are breast discomfort due to tender and swollen breasts, abdominal bloating, frequent urination, fatigue, etc.

Well, to find out whether you are really pregnant, you have to go for a clinically recommended Pregnancy test. Kits to perform the test at home are also available.

The new feature that appears during the second trimester (13-28 weeks) of a normal pregnancy is a progressive enlargement of the lower abdomen or the growing uterus. Take extra care of your health and increase the nutrition intake for the healthy growth of your unborn baby.

You need more rest during Pregnancy. Try to lie down and relax with your feet up once or twice a day. Brisk walking, freehand exercises, aerobics and swimming are also helpful to keep your body fit. However, don’t indulge in vigorous workouts. Consult your doctor or chiropractor, whenever required.

Further, a well-balanced diet is essential for maternal health and for nourishing the growing fetus in the womb.

During the last trimester of Pregnancy, you can actually feel the fetal movements. It is the most endearing moment for an expecting mother. Her body goes through drastic changes - physical, hormonal and emotional as well. These changes often give rise to various physical discomforts like sleep disorders, hypertensive disorders, increased snoring or Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), etc. With the progressive Pregnancy, the expecting mother also experiences severe back pain, indigestion problems, sore ribs, depression, anxiety and frequent mood swings.

Therefore, proper medical care, guidance and empathetic behavior of her loved ones can help her to overcome pregnancy woes, make her feel comfortable and prepare her for giving Birth. All you need is a safe and healthy environment.
