Though everybody gains weight during pregnancy, how much weight should be gained and the rate should be monitored carefully. Gaining weight suddenly or too much is considered detrimental to the mother as well as the fetus. The first trimester may see up to 5 pounds of weight gain. Around eight weeks into pregnancy, one may not gain any weight but actually lose it due to nausea, vomiting and general dislike for food. The ninth week will see the beginning of regular weight gain. In the tenth week, the pregnant woman may feel warm due to increase in blood volume. The size of uterus grows and cramps in the feet may be felt around the last few weeks of the first trimester. The placenta will start functioning and this will be a reason for regular weight gain.
During the second trimester, maximum weight is gained. The total weight gained during this period may be between 13-19 pounds. The mean gain of weight will be about 5-10 pounds during the 17 th week. Due to stretching of abdominal ligaments and increase in body weight, achiness may be felt in the belly and lower back. Increase in weight changes the centre of gravity and this account for many women falling down and other such accidents during the 22 nd week.
During the third trimester, between 8-11 pounds weight is gained. This period sees rapid weight gain as the baby gets ready to come out. An average woman should normally gain 1 lb of weight every week during this course of pregnancy.
